Oromocto Partners with the UNB Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management to Develop Phase I of the Town of Oromocto Urban Forest Management Plan

The Town of Oromocto recently was presented with a copy of the Town of Oromocto Urban Forest Management Plan, Phase I by Jasen Golding, RPF – Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management, UNB.  This partnership began in 2019 when the Town and UNB agreed to develop an urban forest management plan for the Town as a result of the discovery of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).

The Town of Oromocto Urban Forest Management Phase 1 was developed by 10 students of the class of 2020 University of New Brunswick Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management guided by technical and academic professionals from UNB who provided support in the development of the green infrastructure plan as well as Town staff.

Phase I includes a detailed inventory of the Town’s street, golf course and key parks’ tree populations; their respective current state of health; a strategic plan to mitigate the impact of insect and disease and climate change; ways to increase public engagement; and, guidance to monitor the health of the urban forest to enhance its longevity.  This phase will become part of the overall Oromocto Urban Forest Management Plan as staff implement the recommendations on re-planting, new planting and tree maintenance and removal (particularly as it relates to the EAB threat).

“Town Council is committed to sustainable growth and this plan is a component piece of that strategic objective.  With the assistance of UNB we are now in a better position to manage our urban forest with the goal for continuous improvement for its health and longevity,” said Mayor Powell.

Phase II will begin soon and will focus on the other forested areas of Oromocto, the Base Garrison and the Oromocto First Nation providing management strategies and recommendations to monitor the health of the urban forest to enhance its longevity.
