Biological Control of Biting Insects Press Release

  • 2023-03-27

GDG Environnement will carry out the program to control biting insects using a biological larvicide in the Town of Oromocto

A mosquito info line is set up to answer citizens' questions, please call or email  1-844-840-8700 or write to infomoustique@gdg.ca.

On sunny days beginning in April, a team will begin monitoring breeding grounds for mosquito (Culicidae) and/or black fly (Simulidae) larvae within the Town. Following the observations, and depending on weather conditions, the team will determine the precise date on which the first treatments will be performed. Only environments where larvae are present will be treated. The larvicide targets the generation of larvae present in the water, but since the larvicide degrades rapidly, subsequent treatments can be applied for new generations during the season.

This control program will help to significantly reduce the nuisance caused by biting insects without affecting our ecosystems, flora, fauna, or even other species of insects that coexist. This allows us to live near wetlands without the discomfort or constant need to spray with chemical insect repellent.  The Town has made the HEALTHY choice to offer its citizens the opportunity to enjoy and take full advantage of outdoor spaces and activities.

It should be noted that all control programs using biological larvicides are strictly regulated. Indeed, planned operations are subject to the highest level of regulatory supervision, namely a permit from the Minister of Environment is issued for each program. In addition, wildlife advisories taking into account ecosystem sensitivity are also issued by the Minister of Environment and Ministerr of Natural Resources.

During the season, if you have any questions, we invite you to use the "Info-mosquito" line at:

 1-844-840-8700 or write to infomoustique@gdg.ca.

It should be noted that vehicles and employees will always display the GDG Environment logo.

In order to improve the quality of service, here are some recommendations citizens can do to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes in residential areas:

  • Prepare your swimming pool early; An unstarted pool can generate mosquitoes as early as May.
  • Make sure your drains are in good condition and that water drains are working properly.
  • Do not leave tires or containers that can hold water outside or near homes.
  • Turn your boat upside down, empty wheelbarrows and water-filled buckets, as these are mosquito-producing environments.

The biological product used in treatments, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), has been proven safe for 40 years around the world.  The product is completely safe for the health of the population and other living organisms.

A summary document on Bti with a section of scientific references is also available under this link:  https://www.gdg.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Document-Bti-update-ENG.pdf
