Authority
The Local Governance Act of New Brunswick authorizes the Town of Oromocto Council to establish services that are deemed to be expedient for the peace, order and good governance of the municipality and for promoting the health, safety and welfare of its residents. The Act also permits local governments to enact by-laws to carry out these services. In order to do so, each by-law is validated once it is read three times by title and read in its entirety in a regular or special meeting of Council at least once prior to third reading by title. It does not matter if the by-law is a new one, is being amended or is being repealed; the process each time is the same.
All Town by-laws are maintained by the Town Clerk's Office. You may receive a copy of any one of these by-laws by contacting the Town Clerk’s office at (506) 357-4442, or by-laws can be viewed in PDF format as listed below.
By-Laws for the Town of Oromocto
The Town of Oromocto has a number of By-Laws respecting Administrative Matters, Land Use, Regulations and Licensing, Safety, Traffic and Streets, Public Works, and Zoning.
By-Law Compliance and Enforcement
Municipal Enforcement Officers work with citizens to ensure that Oromocto's basic community standards are complied with.
Where citizen activities or property conditions don't meet acceptable municipal standards, By-Law Enforcement Officers provide education, warnings, inspections, and/or penalties. The Town encourages safety, cleanliness, and livability practices through the use of its By-Law Enforcement Officers, NBSPCA Animal Control Officers and RCMP.
Investigating and Enforcing By-Law Complaints
In addition to Planning and Compliance By-Law Enforcement Officers, the Town also provides enforcement authorities to the NBSPCA Animal Control Officer and to the RCMP to investigate complaints from citizens relating to by-law violations. The common violations include animal care and control, parking and property maintenance.
If you are found to have violated a by-law:
- The officer will help you to understand how you contravened the by-law and what you should do to fix the problem
- The officer may issue a warning notice with directions to remedy the problem, depending on the circumstances
- The officer may issue a fine immediately, depending on the circumstances
- Bylaw officers will not necessarily issue a warning in all by-law situations.
Bylaw Complaint Service
You may make by-law complaints online by completing this complaint form or if you prefer, you may call the Planning and Compliance Office at 506-357-4500 to register your complaint

Responding to Your Complaint
Once the Town has received your complaint, it will take the following steps:
- A file is created specifying your concerns and forwarded to a by-law enforcement officer
- The officer investigates your complaint within 4 business days
- The officer may issue a warning notice with directions to remedy the problem within a specified time frame, or issue a fine immediately, depending on the circumstances
- The officer may issue an order, which allows the Town to fix the problem and bill the property owner for the cost
- The Town may contact you to appear as a witness, if the matter goes to court.
